Overview
The Canada Post Endangered Whales Souvenir Sheet issued on May 20, 2022, highlights five whale species assessed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). This limited-edition sheet, printed in a quantity of 75,000, features five Permanent™ domestic rate stamps, each depicting a different whale species.
Design & Artwork
Illustrated by renowned artist David Miller, the stamps capture the grace and beauty of these magnificent marine mammals in their underwater environments. The species featured are:
- Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas) – Found in the St. Lawrence Estuary, Cumberland Sound, and Ungava Bay.
- Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) – The largest animal on Earth, inhabiting both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
- Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) – Particularly the Southern Resident population in the Northeast Pacific.
- Northern Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) – Residing in the deep waters of the Scotian Shelf.
- North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) – One of the world’s most endangered whale species.
